CNN host Don Lemon criticized President Donald Trump for his vacuous Martin Luther King, Jr. Day proclamation following racist remarks for which the president has not apologized.
Lemon played a tape of Trump's proclamation announcement, made only one day after reports of the president calling African nations "sh*thole countries."
“So, that’s what he said today in front of the cameras, but remember behind the cameras this is what the president just said yesterday,” Lemon said before repeating Trump's previous racist remarks. “Kind of makes your skin crawl to hear him talk about Dr. Martin Luther King’s values. And more than that, it whitewashes Dr. King.”
“Donald Trump has proved over and over again his words and actions are a step backwards from the ideals of America, a step backwards from the real ideals and word of Martin Luther King,” the host continued.
Lemon read a quote from King critiquing capitalism and reminding the audience that our economy was built through the labor of enslaved people.
"Contrast that with President Trump asking why we can’t have more immigrants from places like Norway, forgetting that it was people from sh*thole countries who built this country, who built the White House," Lemon concluded. "Nothing that Donald Trump says can change that.”
