- Kapten & Son's elegantly simple watches work with all sorts of styles and dress codes.
- The company's clear pricing structure makes the purchase process easy. The priciest watch Kapten & Son offers costs less than $300, and plenty of them cost less than $100.
- Men and women alike can choose from dozens of wrist bands and multiple case colors to find their perfect watch.
Kapten & Son wristwatches are not that expensive. Frankly, when compared to some of the finest watches available, they're, well, cheap. But that's a price tag thing, not a quality thing. I've owned three myself, and not one of them has ever lost a minute. My go-t0 Kapten & Son — the 40mm Campus Black Brown Leather wristwatch — does cost me some time, though, as people ask about it regularly.
The priciest watch Kapten & Son offers costs less than $300, with most of their chronometers priced under $175. And plenty of them cost less than $100, by the way. But the low price and reliable quality isn't actually what makes these watches special. It's the simplicity of their design and the ease with which you can find the ideal watch for your taste that makes the brand remarkable.
Every single watch Kapten & Son offers has a round face. And with a few exceptions, every single watch they make has a single dial that is used to control the hour and minute hand. (There is no second hand, which you might see as a drawback, but which I feel enhances their aesthetic.) Kapten & Son watch cases measure either 40 millimeters across (that's the Campus size) or 36mm in diameter (the Campina). That's it, two sizes of round case. With me so far?
The watch cases come in black, gold, or silver, with the hands matching the case color. The watch faces come in black or white. So you can have a round 40mm or 36mm watch with a silver case and a white face, a black face in a gold case, and so forth. Three choices — size and the two color options — allow for about a dozen variations. But then we get to the watch bands.
Kapten & Son offers literally dozens of different watch bands. You can choose a multicolored cloth band or a classic polished leather band. You can choose gold mesh or orange suede. You can get blue and white stripes, pink and green stripes, or red, white, and blue. With the right band, the same Kapten & Son wristwatch can work with a business suit or a pair of worn jeans, with a cocktail dress or playful romper.
Now, you might think all of these choices make finding the right watch harder, but in fact, it's quite the opposite. You're probably going to like one case color more than the others. Say, gold. And within that case, you'll probably have a preference as to whether a black or a white face looks better. The case size is pretty easy to choose, too: Larger wrists need the 40mm, smaller wrists need the 36. So really, choosing the band is the only part of the process that might take you a while, but if you just think about the type of clothing you most often wear, even that should come easily enough.
And paying for a Kapten & Son watch is certainly painless.
