The co-host and senator had a polite but tense discussion.

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand appeared on The View and was met with polite resistance from liberal co-host Joy Behar. But the two went on to have a meaningful dialog about the importance of progressive action against rampant misogyny.

“I’ve got a little bit of a bone to pick with you. I know that you led the charge to get Al Franken to resign from the Senate," Behar said. "I just thought that was unfair, to make him the example when the president of the United States — so many allegations of harassment against him and I don’t see him going anywhere.”

Behar pointed out that Gillibrand, who still refers to Franken as a "friend," led the charge for his resignation before hearings could be held on the matter. Gillibrand responded that she didn't feel comfortable remaining silent amid the information that was available.

The initial disagreement over Franken led to a wider discussion about Gillibrand's opinion that the Democratic Party should set the highest standard and not allow Republicans' repugnant behavior to lower the bar set by progressives.

In the end, Behar and Gillibrand agreed about the need to hold Trump accountable for actions that the GOP continues to ignore.

“He should be held accountable and, because he’s unwilling to resign, Congress should be doing hearings," Gillibrand said. Where are the hearings on all of these allegations of sex assault and sexual harassment."
